Elke Groen’s Nightstill portrays images of the Dachstein mountains. Rather than being a documentary record however, it appears as a confrontation with the landscape as it is. To achieve this, Groen uses an alienative exposure technique. Over two winters, during and after a full moon, she exposed single frames for 30 seconds each and filmed over twelve hours of real time images which were then condensed into an under nine minute-long film. Through the condensation, the rock massif appears doubly static, movements and the play of light take on even more dynamism and fleetingness and the night turns into day.
