Carola is fat. Carola lives in a godforsaken place named Kriebethal. Even as a little girl, she shut up when the TV went on. Carola is a TV addict. Like anybody with a habit, she has experimented with different drugs. She went through a Cowboy and Indian phase, followed by Dallas, pornography, and horror films. At present she's wallowing in a sea of soaps. The drug is in plentiful supply: the box delivers the goods, and Carola takes all the time she needs for her habit - come hell or high water. A 45-minute episode of Dallas is her dally religious service, the corpulent Roseanne is Carola's imaginary twin TV sister, a high priestess guarding her dream of life, a figure of identification in spirit and voluminous flesh. Carola has opted for a life of TV existentialism, and lives it with dogged resolution.
