"Life is…" refers to the zoologist’s Mat Ridley’s famous statement “Life is one” and is part of a project realised during art & science residency at he KHOJ Artists’ Association and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Delhi in summer 2007. Joanna Hofmann’s video is combining laboratory material with daily experiences. Through eastern and western traditions the film questions natural and conceptual borders and underlines the complexity of the idea of world harmony. The film uses research material on the SARS virus which was recorded for the first time in China in 2003 and quickly developed itself to global epidemic.
