Ruth White
Ruth White
Ruth White is trained as a classical musician but became a pioneer of electronic music and is especially known for her explorations of the sound universe of the moog synthesizer. Her early artistic works from the late 1960s and early 1970s are distinguished by their use of “historical” material such as Tarot cards, modernist poetry, and classical music as the basis of her electronic compositions. She founded The Electronic Music Association (with Paul Beaver) that introduced the general audience to “electroacoustic music.” A strong trajectory in her work has been an interest in the use of technology for educational purposes as well as in educational recordings encouraging children to read. This trajectory has become more pronounced in her more recent work and now also involves a publishing company.
