Before the internet there was a wireless radio internet. This (non-Bundesnetzagentur-approved) workshop will look back to ALOHANET and AMPRNET and examine how the 1980s phenomenon of packet radio is still relevant today. The workshop will be a hands-on, interactive demonstration of the possibilities of packet radio and its workflow/tool-chain. Participants will explore both historical and contemporary examples and try to set up a little radio network on the spot. Looking beyond the usual "when the shit hits the fan" scenarios, we will discuss the potentials and shortcomings of these 6km+ range wireless “routers” by studying one of the simplest forms of digital wireless communication and how it can fit within the OSI stack.

transmediale Co-Curricular is carried out in cooperation with Allianz Kulturstiftung.
