Safe Distance
Safe Distance
The most prominent promise in today's warfare is a safe war, a war without casualties. The campaign against Yugoslavia was entirely based on the premise that it is not actually a war but rather a humanitarian intervention with some collateral damage. The attack on Yugoslavia is the first war in history won exclusively with air strikes, without the involvement of ground troops. Safe Distance, at first supports this utopia of a safe war, but its final consequence reveals the absurdity of this idea. Safe Distance is based on a video recorded in 1999 during the NATO intervention against Yugoslavia, and was post-produced by kuda.org. It was recorded on board one of the fighter planes, and shows the last moments before the plane crashed. The pilotÂ’s display is the only connection he has with the outside world; he is isolated from the reality he produces on the ground below. Every object is part of this virtual display which the pilot is completely dependent upon.
