Remembering Micky Kwella
Remembering Micky Kwella
Micky Kwella, who was a co-founder and long-time director of transmediale, died suddenly and unexpectedly on 7 February 2003 at the age of 54. Between 1988 and 2000 he was most influential in shaping the festival, and was internationally known as the main force behind transmediale. In the context of transmediale.04 we want to commemorate Micky Kwella in a special evening programme which will be dedicated to him and his work in media art and independent media practice. We will show excerpts from art videos and documentaries as well as other documentary footage, all of which will be exemplary for the broad range of interests that Micky represented. Some of his friends, former colleagues and collaborators will report about their memories of and experiences with Micky Kwella. On the occasion of the festival, a German-language book will be published: Bandbreite. Medien zwischen Kunst und Politik' (Kadmos Kulturverlag Berlin, 2004, eds. Andreas Broeckmann und Rudolf Frieling). This book, dedicated to Micky Kwella, contains 21 texts which describe different aspects of the historical context of his work, spanning from art to independent media initiatives. This book will be presented here for the first time.
