Michael Zinganel's video installations are based on the simple architectonic principle of measuring a space and creating a relation between the space, objects and persons. Tiny monitors are inserted into sculptural basic forms such as a rectangle, a circle or a cross displaying a computer generated black and white image. The number and scale of the moving image varies according to the spatial situation.
Here a passage-way leads to a wall onto which an image is projected. The dimensions of its white frame match exactly the coordinates of the wall. The image displays a computergenerated black disc that is inscribed within the rectangular dimensions of the wall. It touches both sides and travels slowly and unerringly from bottom to top and vice versa. The soundless moving image not only sounds out the limits of the screen, but of the space itself. The wall seems to become lighter almost as if it were a canvas, whereas the black disc, the projected image, is perceived as a moving black hole. It renders the perception of the space unstable and dynamic, ultimately stimulating the viewer's awareness of his or her own condition.
