The INM Institute for new media in Frankfurt-on-Main serves as the forum and platform for artistic-scientific discussions on the theory and practice of new and interactive media. The objective of the INM is to investigate artistic-scientific traditions, find new forms of expression in context-sensitive and interactive media for the arts, and to make use of this information in the future in the fields of art, science and education. On the threshold of the 21st century, the INM positions itself, both critically and creative ly, at the "cutting edge" of current developments. INM is in the heterogenous sector of interactive media:
- new media training platform for media-artists and scien tists
(video, computer, World Wide Web and Multimedia)
- studios for independent art projects in the area of new interactive media (video-studios, 3D-computer-graphic plat forms, WWW server)
- experimental laboratory for basic scientific research with learning-agents (knowbots) and simulated model worlds (chaos cube). - production and application zone for prototypes from the artistic-scientific areas of the new media (WorldWideWeb, Internet, 3D computer-animation, media-art installations, multi-media applications and cyberspace events.)
Since September 1994, the INM has existed through the support of the recently established Institue for New Media Association, and was first conceived at the Städel, Frank furt's School of Visual Arts, whose president, in 1989, was Kasper König. From here the "Institute for New Media" was founded, and between 1990 to 1994, its first director, Peter Weibel, developed the institute to an internationally recog nized forum for art and theory In the areas of new media. Along with developing its successful tradition, the INM aims to integrate new media in various theoretical as well as practical projects.
