David Link holds the Chair for Experimental Technologies in the Art Context at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. In 2004, he wrote his PhD in philosophy at Humboldt-University Berlin, and the Academy of Arts and the Media, Cologne, with a thesis on text generating software in the early years of computer history (“Poetry Machines / Machine Poetry”). His current research focuses on the development of an archaeology of algorithmic artefacts. Since 1997, numerous national and international institutions and festivals have exhibited his computer art installations and performances. His work “Poetry Machine” (2001), an interactive text generator based on semantic networks, is part of the permanent collection at the Center for Art and Media Technology ZKM, Karlsruhe. In his most recent project, “LoveLetters” (2009), he resurrected one of the first computer programs ever, an algorithm for the generation of love letters from 1952, and subsequently constructed a replica of the largely unknown original machine – the British Manchester Mark 1.
