One of the most loved family hobbies of the nineteenth century was the making of abstruse picture-books - suggestive of a form of visual economizing that preceded the TV-age. This pastime was so popular then that picture-pages with flowers, animals or uncanny people were specially printed for private scrap-books. Serious-minded "ephemeral societies" were founded in order to trade and collect these gorgeously designed pages of printed cut-outs. In the hands of artists like Anderson or Will these chance arrangements gave rise to surreal results, and they surely offer a seasoned video-juggler like Callas the ideal starting point for his work.
