A gripping documentary in which prize-winning investigative reporter Jon Alpert follows the day-to-day lives of several residents of the "Crack Streets" - the new civilian death-rows. His sad heroes and heroines know what fate holds in store, but as one woman called Brenda says: "I know it kills me - but I love it more than life." A pregnancy adds to her problems; she admits herself to a rehabilitation clinic, only to break out (as usual) a short time later. She decides to keep the baby, vanishes from the streets, and finally opts for an abortion. Her friends drift in and out of prison on burglary charges until 15-year sentences keep them off the streets more permanently. Terminus. Boo-Boo, the only survivor, the one who stays clean and finds a regular job, is diagnosed as HIV positive. He promptly loses his job, every feels sorry for him, and life carries on down the Crack Street...
