Hyperscratch Ver. 6 - The Gate Of 2000 Ad
Space Hyperscratch is a system that produces sounds and images solely by the movements visitors' hands in the room. The video control system, which is equipped with more than 100 code points, observes the visitor, reacts to the movements and controls the sound and image archive.
Spectators stand on the invisible line in the centre of the room like supplicants waiting at the gate to the next millennium.
Instead of knocking to gain entry, seeking and hesitant hands, like those of people trying to establish contact with the different world behind a pane of glass, probe the neural nodes of the control panel. Nobody can pass through the gate of time; waiting in front of it, one has the sensation of being a focal point between past and future. But acoustically and visually, at least, the visitor has some chance of advancing to new levels. The artist opens an acoustic and optical kaleidoscope made up of alienated video sequences, copies of old war reports, stills of politicians making history, scientists and philosophers, and abstract geometrical forms as well as the rhythms of Indonesian Gamran music or tones recalling minimal music. With some compositional creativeness, spectators can develop their own associations from scraps of recollection and visions of the future.
