Le Vidéographe
Le Vidéographe
VIDEOGRAPHE TURNS TWENTY! Created in 1971, from an experimental democratization project, Videographe has played a pioneering role in Quebec and Canada through its use of video as an instru-ment of research and social intervention. During the 70s, individuals from diverse artistic, social and cultural backgrounds exchanged ideas at VG's office. In 1973 Vi- deographe incorporated itself as a non-profit organization. The productions reflected the political and social events as well as the ideologies and struggles which marked Quebec's society. Various experiments impel the video language to evolve by stretching its technological limits, as video attempts to define itself more clearly as an artistic medium. VG had to consider the growing demand for international productions while ensuring accessibility to members of the community, allowing them to produce works of fiction, documentaries and art videos independently. The video library comprises more than 750 international productions - VG's distribution department seeks to add high quality works to its collection, to market these works, to ensure that they are entered in events and to reinforce relations with institu-tions and cultural organizations interested in making use of these productions. AND WHAT ABOUT TOMORROW? Twenty years. A generation and the transition to adulthood - the video medium is but one viewpoint in today's world of images and communication. VG intends in being part of any thought process concerning the medium, even if it means disrupting what it stands for in order to redefine it again. The motivation and drive are present. All that's left for us to do is tackle the challenges.
