Once
This video is designed as a typical crime story and tells the story of a unkle who ran into trouble because of his gambling debts and his nice. The film is a profile of this colourful district. Once (meaning ‘eleven' in Spanish)is an old neighbouhood in Buenos Aires. In the 1920‘s and 1930’s, Jewish and Armenian merchants had settled in Once; more recently, they were followed by Asian immigrants. They run their businesses, stores and craftwork shops by exploiting the cheap labour provided by poor immigrants from neighbouring countries. In this ‘melting pot' they are joined by peddlers, the homeless, unemployed, gamblers, prostitutes, transvestites and also preachers of different sects. Once is a Babylonian, overpopulated city, a world where different cultures coexist, as distant one from one another as orthodox Lithuanian lews from northern Coyas, Chinese who spent their childhood in Shanghai, their early teens in Taiwan and their youth in ... Once.
