Basic Theory for New Media at Department 02 of the Hochschule der Kunste Berlin. To be able to use the unlimited possibilities of multimedia tools systematic ally as instruments of communication, it is necessary to have a fundamental understanding of the forms of human
perception in environments which have been transformed by advancements. We are on our way to a new basic theory, which is inevitably the basic theory of perception, in constant reflection of the respective forms of stimuli of a new technology. The goal is to develop new criteria as a basis for creative work with non-linear media. Hence,
instruments must be created to enable us to cope confidently as a human being with information, and implies the development of new information structures. A realisation of this objective was achieved by Department 02 in the course "Designing with Digital Media" at the HdK in the fall semester of 1996/1997. The general theme for the project to be carried out by each student was the "definition of position", the communication of a place or object by adequate multimedia translation. Based on this task, a seminar structure was laid down in the basic course which made it possible to learn important perceptual aspects of media work in short weekly assignments, and then to relate them to the respective sitelobject. In the last part of the seminar, these experiences were to be taken a stage further in a work of the student's choice. Each developmental step was to be documented and understood as part of the whole. time space colour sound process. Three different semester projects are presented here to demonstrate the forms in which the assignment was realised. Project 1 - Tree. The oldest plane tree at Potsdamer Platz becomes the interface of its own media portrait. Project 2 - Appartment. A floor plan which portrays one's own apartment becomes the basis for the visualisation of a process. Project 3 - Cup. This portrait of a cup illustrates the complexity of grasping its virtual appearance. New Narrative Concepts at the Hochschule fur Film und Fernsehen in Pots dam-Babelsberg. The topic 'New Media - New Dramaturgies' is a main subject of the study programme 'Media Sciences'. In fields related to film, television and communication science, parallel processes of change in digital media are investigated. The seminars include an intro duction in artistic media conceptions, and discussions of more recent media theory. Emphasis lies on innovative narrative strategies. For this purpose, creative and practice-oriented supple mentary projects in the field of Internetlonline research and writing are being developed. This event presents the following results and illustrative seminar contexts: CD ROM „HFF@home“. A multimedia presentation of the HFF as a two semester project during the fourth year of studies. Last Entry: 1st of July.. Virginia Woolfs novella "Orlando" (1928), with its facets to gender change and identity, provides, as a journey through time and space, the
inspiration for this fictional narrative framework on the Internet: students as well as participants world-wide are asked to design an encounter with the Net-figure Orlando based on their individual backgrounds. Scenario. The establishment of an Internet showroom and forum on story projects, essays and bibliographies, as a platform for seminars and discussions. A Multimedia Project by Students of Different Semesters at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. With HdK students from the Berlin/Media Centre, Rotraut Pape and Rike Anders present "SIXCON KOSMOS", a multimedia project by students of different semesters in the field of "Technical Visual Media" from 1995-1997. A selection of works from the project will be shown. SIHCON-KOSMOS
The sixth continent was discovered some time ago. Recently a mass exodus began, a true migration of people to this, in part, still completely undeveloped region. Fertile oases came into being. Yet alongside law-abiding settlers, a large number of spongers and criminals arrived in SIXCON, too. They wildly staked out claims, and spread terror and crime. Overnight, the identity and culture of entire republics were effaced, so that with time, memories took on ever greater importance, because only a few people still had any. For fear of losing even these through viruses or acts of sabotage, time-honoured methods were remembered and used to conserve personal memories for the future.
