The Line of Fire
The Line of Fire
Hell-fire. Heat that seems to be felt by all the sensors of the body. Dalibor Martinis guides the viewer into a narrow, dark passage where three oversize faces, divided into different sections, are projected onto one long wall. Fire-breathers in performance, sometimes close-up, sometimes at medium distance, staring the viewer directly in the eye. Faces rigid, they place a burning ember to their lips and then, in an eruption of violence, expel a ball of fire that virtually bursts into the space in front of the projected image. Experiencing this inescapable proximity, feeling trapped in the danger zone on the one hand, seeing the recurrent ritual of concentrated tension on the other hand, the viewer is swept along by different sensations. As if seeing behind the projected images, the eye lingers on personal recollections, the mind associating Lucifer's embers or the terror of war. The phrase "The Line of Fire" is also familiar from the idiom of war.
