Call of Duty is one of the most successful first-person shooters in computer gaming history. In the Black Ops instalment from 2010, the action takes place in Nuketown, a city in the American desert where the effects of atomic bombs were tested on people, cars and houses. The ‘residents’ of Nuketown are mannequins.

They are not part of the game, but shooting their heads off yields bonus points. Ip Yuk-Yiu hacked the game and presents a post-battle, pre-bomb scene in which the enemy, the player’s guns and the control panel are gone, leaving empty spaces and the now headless manequins, their representation in the game indistinguishable from that of people.
