Three Questions on Media Criticality. A Critical Media Salon
The Critical Media Lab (Basel) and transmediale 2015 co-host a discussion about the past, present and future of criticality in, with, of and through ‘media.’ The session is an open dialogue that began online prior to the discussion at transmediale 2015, via a solicitation of responses to three questions on media criticality: What are promising modes of critique today? What is critical about media technologies? What comes after critique?

The transmediale festival, and the many contexts of art making and research which constitute its attendant communities, has long tried to exist within the traction between the progressivist undertakings of technology and design events (e.g.: Creative Applications, TechCrunch, Siggraph), while tempering the criticality-as-criticism-of humanities and social science discourse of those (College Art Association, Modern Language Association, Society for Social Studies of Science) who engage with but do not use technical media. But what use is all this middling? How does one marshall effective critique, or is such a question (or the three we’ve already asked) even relevant in a landscape where dominant discourses subsume all attempts at destabilisation, deconstruction or revision?
Having collected responses online, these will be used to foment discussion as part of this live event on 1 February 2015. A publication of collated responses will also be exhibited and displayed at the festival. Some responses will be read aloud by discussion participants, irrespective of their author’s presence or absence at the event. Please join us!
