Travelling Light
Travelling Light
Lindsay Kemp is a brilliant mime who acts, dances, lives, educates, dreams, sings. His path to the profession was strange, since he was forced to live out the dreams of his mother: his firstborn sister was supposed to become an actress but died in childhood. Lindsay was forced to follow in her footsteps, and yet for years he wasn't himself when he acted - until he finally discovered his own identity, both as a person and as a mime. Theo Eshetu has spent years travelling the path of many: he shoots commercials for a living even while his heart remains drawn to art. He has shot a number of experimental videos which confront issues of ethnography or culture. "Travelling Light" is his first long work. Theo Eshetu has not only made a jump but an enormous leap, and a successful one at that. Without commentary he draws a portrait of Lindsay Kemp, in the process giving Kemp and his friends only a few scant opportunities to speak. Rarely has so much been told by means of electronic effects as in this tape. In a spirit congenial to that of the mime's, Eshetu captures his subject's essence and concerns by converting them into images. This well-rounded work is marked by a combination of stylistic elements tested earlier and now brought to a new level of perfection.
