The Video Data Bank is the nation s leading distributor of tapes by and about contemporary artists. Over 250 artists are represented in its distribution collection. The VDB house three collections: 1) Experimental Video including over 1000 recent titles by appr. 200 independent producers, collectives and artists. 2) Early Video History includes seminal works from 1968-76, including the historic Castelli- Sonnabend Collection. 3) On Art and Artists is a collection of some 250 interviews with contemporary artists such as the Guerilla Girls, Karen Finley, Mary Kelly, Vito Acconci and Joseph Beuys. The VDB is dedicated to expanding the use and understanding of experimental media within a broad cultural context. Projects such as the Video Drive In and Home Video Series are aimed at increasng the awareness of artist-produced video outside of the boundaries of the art community. The Video Drive In is a free screening event designed to draw large public audiences (5,000 - 10,000 per screening) by presenting video in the nostalgic outdoor drive-in theatre. The VDB has also produced 2 video library series in an effort to make independent video available to diverse group of people: Video Against AIDS, a six hour compilation of works concerning the AIDS crises: and, What Does She Want, a compilation of the leading work in film, performance and video by women addressing the complex themes of feminism.
