Surrealistic, ironic, poetic - memoirs as experimental video. John Conomos looks back as a Greek over his autobiographical landscapes, literally and allegorically. As an Australian he now lives between cultures. Quoting Man Ray, Buster Keaton, Max Ernst and others, he tries to convey how a „post-colonial alien" feels trapped in post-war Australia. The video consists essentially of simple yet highly expressive images, a carefully measured narrative style, and a clearly pronounced idiom almost musical in its effect. It is no easy leap from a small Cyclade to a large continent, but an infinitely exciting one. Uncle Manoli plays a key role throughout: a rather misanthropic writer who likes nothing better than to lounge around in taverns playing cards.
